Fat transfer, also known as a fat injection or fat grafting, is a surgical procedure where a doctor transfers fat from one part of your body to another. The main aim of this procedure is to improve or enhance the area where the fat is injected. It is a safe procedure that gives you long-lasting results. The method involves extracting adipose fat using liposuction, processing it, and then re-injecting the purified fat into the chosen area.
Fat transfer is a new concept that has become popular due to its natural results and the benefits it has to offer. Individuals who are unhappy with the shape and volume of their face, breasts, hips, abdomen, or buttocks can have their fat transferred to these areas and enhance their appearance.
How is the fat transfer procedure performed?
The doctor will harvest the fat from one area of the body, process it, purify, and inject it with specially made needles into the areas that need augmentation. The procedure has to be repeated a few times to attain the desired results.
Fat transfer is performed in 3 stages:
In the first stage, the surgeon will select a fat removal site and inject it with a local anesthetic. A small incision is made into the area, where the fat is removed by inserting a cannula attached to a syringe. The fat is extracted in a sterile and careful manner.
The second stage involves the purification and transfer of the extracted fat. Once enough fat has been taken from the donor area, the fat is processed and prepared for transfer to the selected area with syringes' help. A centrifuge is used to purify the fat as a filtration process to remove the fat's impurities before injecting it into the patient.
The last stage comprises the placement of the purified fat. The area which has to receive the graft is prepared. A cannula or needle is inserted several times into the area being augmented. Each time a cannula is withdrawn, a line of heavy tissue parcels in natural planes is deposited. This process is repeated until the desired correction is achieved. The grafted area is massaged to produce a pleasing contour, and it is covered with a bandage.
When should you consider fat transfer?
Fat transfer appeals to a greater audience, as the procedure is minimally invasive and versatile. This procedure can be considered in the following instances:
- To augment the shape and size of the buttocks.
- The sunken and creased facial areas need a facelift.
- To have a lasting correction than temporary fillers provide.
- To hide the visible signs of breast implants or fill in contour abnormalities acquired during breast reconstruction procedures.
- To erase the scars, improve the body contour, rejuvenate your face and hands and fill in the bodily depressions.
- To remove the fat from your cheekbones.
- To eliminate the deep grooves that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth.
